AUSTRALIAN BLINDNESS FORUM

(ABF) is a not-for-profit organisation funded by the contributions of its members which include major blindness agencies across Australia and the consumer group Blind Citizens Australia.

They aim to operate as the peak body representing the blindness sector for the benefit of people who are blind or vision impaired.

BLIND CITIZENS AUSTRALIA

Blind Citizens Australia provides the following services:

ANGELS IN APRONS

COMPLETE AGED CARE PLACEMENT SOLUTIONS

Complete Aged Care Placement Solutions is a service for individuals and their carers, seeking personalised assistance through the aged care placement. The fee structure varies depending on the level of service provided.

FAMILY RELATIONSHIP SERVICE FOR CARERS

A free of charge family mediation and counselling service, that is available to help families who are considering future care arrangements for a disabled family member.

Issues such as the division of responsibility, for example the roles within the family for medical, financial, living or social issues of the disabled family member.

The service is able to assist families with these difficult issues by introducing a neutral mediator or trusted professional to help negotiate favourable outcomes best suited for each individual family unit.

Counselling, Mediation, Information and Referral to other organisations will be offered when necessary. All services will be offered in the local area of the family concerned where possible.

HOME CARE PACKAGES PROGRAMME

The Home Care Packages Programme provides older people who want to stay at home with access to a range of ongoing personal services, support services and clinical care that help the with their day to day activities.

A specialist national provider of high quality in-home care services, supporting seniors to live independently at home. Services can be provided on an occasional/adhoc or regular basis from a few hours a day, including overnight and 24-hour care. QUEENSLAND RADIO FOR THE PRINT HANDICAPPED 4RPH

A community radio station providing a news, information and reading service directed towards the needs of the vision impaired and those people who are print handicapped either through disability or inability to read the printed word. Broadcasted at 1296 on the AM Dial they can be heard throughout Brisbane and most parts of the near north and south Queensland coasts and further away at night-time. They are on the air 24 hours a day, 10.00pm to 6.00am though a live relay of BBC World Service.

GOOD SHEPHERD MICROFINANCE

No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS)

A community based program providing no interest loans for families and individuals on a low income, enabling them to access fair and safe loans for the purchase of essential goods and services.

NILS is not for emergency relief, e.g. bond or rent money, living expenses or debt repayment.

StepUP Loans

StepUp Loan is a low interest loan between $800 and $3000 for individuals and families on a low income.  Loans can be used to purchase household items, second hand cars, computers, medical and dental expenses and house repairs.

Offer financial assistance and support in the form of grocery hampers, food and prescription vouchers and utility bills in extreme emergencies. THE SALVATION ARMY

The Salvation Army offers a range of support options to help with social difficulties. They provide unlimited practical assistance for low-income families and individuals who are struggling to make ends meet.

They can help in every situation – unemployment, homelessness, poverty, abuse, self-help, aged & disabled care and much more.

Community Services Centre: May offer cash/cheque for: food vouchers or parcels; toys and food hampers for Christmas; clothing, furniture and other household items; accommodation; housing costs; electricity, gas, rates and other household bills; public transport fares; and medical and educational expenses.

LINK VISION

Advocates for better educational and vocational opportunities for children and adults with low or no vision.

As computer skills are now an integral part of a child’s learning environment, Link Vision recognised that a computer mentoring program, targeted specifically for children with low or no vision, using voice to text software would be beneficial. The children learn to use a keyboard and computer from experienced mentors.

Our computer club mentors travel to the child’s school, and at times their home, at a time that is suitable for the parent/teacher/school.

NARBETHONG STATE SPECIAL SCHOOL

We offer an Early Childhood Developmental Program (ECDP) from birth to pre-Prep and a school-age program for students with a vision impairment and intellectual impairment from Prep to Year 12.

The Australian Network on Disability (AND) is a national, membership based, for-purpose organisation that supports organisations to advance the inclusion of people with disability in all aspects of business.

With Stepping Into Internships you’ll gain relevant hands-on work experience in a prestigious private or public-sector organisation.

SAFE HOME

Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) can provide you with on-the-spot advice regarding fire safety. Operation Safehome is one of QFRS’s premier community safety initiatives and enables you to obtain life-saving information in your home.

As part of the program, fire fighters will inspect your home and advise on the best location for smoke alarms, assist in the formulation of a home evacuation plan and address the specific needs of householders such as the correct and safe storage of chemicals.

STATE EMERGENCY SERVICE

Queensland is no stranger to natural events and disasters and the State Emergency Service (SES) provides a vital emergency response to communities during storm and flood emergencies.

If you require help from your local SES during floods or storms there is only one number to call.

Job Centre Australia have a range of training, support and employment opportunities to help people with a disability, illness or health condition.

The CHARGE Syndrome Association of Australasia Ltd

The Association is committed to improving the health and welfare of children and adults diagnosed with CHARGE syndrome by providing information through online newsletters and articles, and organised events for members.

CHARGE syndrome refers to individuals born with growth defects or with developmental delay of eyes (Coloboma), ears, and other body systems. Due to the hearing and vision anomalies, many of these individuals are diagnosed as deaf-blind.

Home Library Service

The Council libraries offer free home delivery for Brisbane residents who are confined to their homes due to ill health or physical disability. The delivery service is also available to people who are at home recovering from operations.  Library staff will select items to suit your preferences and deliver them to you monthly.

QUEENSLAND NARRATING SERVICE

Audio information services for people with print disabilities. Services provided:

  • An ‘on demand’ service for individuals, community organisations, government departments etc who require any type of print material transcribed by human voice to audio format.
  • QNS produces approximately 60 recreational audio books a year. These books can be borrowed from public libraries around the country. See the catalogue page on our website for a list of titles.
  • All print material is transcribed into digital audio format in either CD, MP3 or DAISY format.

  • QNS can advocate on a consumers’ behalf to obtain audio format materials where required.
  • QNS produces a radio program ‘From the Book Jacket’ which is broadcast on the second Monday of every month on Radio 4RPH. PAEDIATRIC LOW VISION CLINIC (PLVC)

Offers direct service provided by the Department of Education to students with vision impairment in state and non-state schools. Services are provided to children with vision impairment, including those with multiple impairments, from birth to school leaving age.

The PLVC provides a range of specialised vision assessments, support and information to assist students with vision impairment, their families, school staff and specialist support staff. Assessments assist in developing an understanding of each child’s vision condition and associated visual behaviours, facilitate student access and participation, and promote learner engagement.

ROMA STREET PARKLANDS GUIDED WALKS

Roma Street Parklands has a guided Sensory walk designed to stimulate the senses, memory and mood.

The Sensory Walk is aimed to stimulate the senses, memory and mood. It is designed for individuals that have a vision impairment and individuals living with brain injuries. This walk is largely based around the quiet surrounds of the Spectacle Garden and The Forest. This walk was trialled with consultants from Vision Australia to ensure the walk meet visitor needs. The walk can also cater for individuals and groups looking for a different way to explore the Parkland surrounds.
